RSS Chief Congress Fact Check: A video of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat is going viral on social media with the claim that he is praising the Congress amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
BOOM fact-checked and found that the viral video is from 2018, when Mohan Bhagwat was talking about the role of Congress in India’s freedom struggle at a three-day RSS event in Delhi. It has no connection with the recent Lok Sabha elections.
In this viral video of about one minute, Mohan Bhagwat can be heard saying, “…people of our country have less political understanding. People know less about who has the power and what is its importance. Political awakening should be done among the people of our country and hence a big movement in the form of Congress arose in the whole country.”
In the video, Mohan Bhagwat further says, “Many great men who sacrificed everything were born in it, whose inspiration still works as an inspiration in our lives, and that stream did the work of bringing the common man of the country on the path of freedom…that stream has a big contribution in achieving our independence.”
Facebook But Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Lalan Kumar has recently shared this five-year-old video Lok Sabha Elections He shared it linking it to and wrote, ‘After the fifth phase, even RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat started remembering the contribution of Congress!! Modi ji is leaving.. INDIA’s government is coming. #RahulGandhi #INDIA_jeetega.’

On watching the video, we found that this news was quoted from the news website ‘Hindustan Times’, the credit of which was given to ANI. Also, the date of 17 September 2018 was also mentioned in the video. This made us suspect that this video is old.
Taking a hint from here, we searched the keywords related to the video on Google. We found this video uploaded on the official YouTube channel of Hindustan Times on September 18, 2018. Video found.
In its description it was told that RSS organized a three-day lecture series in the capital Delhi. During this Mohan Bhagwat talked about the history of Indian freedom movement and explained the important role of Congress in it.
